Tortuguero is a village on the northern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica in the province of Limón. The small village, which can only be reached by boat or plane, is supported almost exclusively by ecotourism. The population is estimated at about 1200-1500.
The name Tortuguero translates as "place where the turtles come" and comes from the Spanish word for "turtle", "tortuga".
