This cormorant sat with its wings spread to dry its feathers. Its feathers are not waterproof so it has to let them dry again after diving and swimming in the water. It is a beautiful sight.
I regularly go to the De Tiendgorzen nature reserve in Nieuwendijk (Zuid-Beijerland). You can spot many different birds there. In general, you see ducks and geese there but occasionally also common terns, spoonbills, white herons and cormorants.
The cormorant I photographed here sits on the railing of a small bridge that used to cross the water. It has since been removed because a beaver started digging on one side of the bridge, making it unstable.
I personally find this a great pity because the cormorants loved to sit on the bridge's railing. Sometimes even with a whole group, they would sit there brushing their wings. Now you don't see many cormorants there anymore. So this photo is extra special to me.
