Conifers are woody plants, mostly trees, so-called "conifers" because of their mostly needle-shaped leaves. Conifers grow mainly in temperate regions; to the extent that they occur in more tropical areas, it is in the mountains. There are "conifer species" whose foliage looks more like leaves than needles. Most conifers are evergreen, but there are also some species that 'lose their needles in winter, such as larch, water cypress and swamp cypress.
