About "Colourful panther portrait with polka dots"

by Frank Daske | Foto & Design

About the artwork

Polka dots are a pattern consisting of evenly distributed dots on a single-coloured background. They have their origins in the 19th century, when they were associated with the folk dance polka. In the visual arts, polka dots are currently best known through the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, who uses them as an expression of her hallucinations and her fear of infinity. Polka dots are also a popular motif in fashion, where they symbolise cheerfulness and a summer mood. Another well-known artist who experimented with polka dots was the German Sigmar Polke, who used them as an ironic commentary on mass production and consumerism. Polka dots therefore have a long and varied history in art and culture and are still an attractive and timeless pattern today. The picture plays with these brightly coloured dots to portray a panther. The result is a colourful, cheerful, optimistic panther portrait - thanks to the polka dots.
