Every spring, the Netherlands transforms into a beautiful landscape as millions of tulips bloom and the fields fill with an explosion of colour! From bright red to soft pink, and from sunny yellow to deep purple - the Dutch tulip fields attract thousands of visitors from all over the world every year, and how could they not? But behind this blooming splendour lies a rich history that dates back to the 16th century.
Originally imported from the Ottoman Empire, the tulip soon found a home in the Netherlands. The 17th century even saw a veritable "tulip mania" in which rare tulip bulbs were traded for hefty sums. Although this tulip mania ended in an economic crisis, the love for the flower remained. Today, therefore, the Netherlands is the world's largest exporter of tulips and the vast fields in the Bulb Region and Flevoland are an iconic image of the country. Definitely recommend planning a visit to Holland's tulip fields.
