About the artwork

A pagoda is a building that can be seen in many Buddhist temples in Asia. It has the shape of a tower that consists of several floors that are getting smaller and smaller. Each floor has its own roof. Besides Buddhist temples one can also find pagodas at Chinese temples and Dao temples.

Pagodas are characteristic of architecture in China, Thailand and Japan, among others. They were developed from the Indian stupa. The pagoda is free of other buildings, so the believing Buddhist can walk around it, as a ritual, to show respect to the relics that are kept inside.

The Schwedagon Pagoda is the largest temple in Myanmar. This cone-shaped, 98-metre-high pagoda, with 50,000 kilos of gold leaf and many thousands of precious gemstones covered, is located on Singuttara hill in a suburb of Rangoon. It is one of the most important Buddhist places of pilgrimage in the world. According to tradition, eight hairs of the last Buddha are kept in the pagoda.

Colin Campbell Cooper (Philadelphia, March 8, 1856 - Santa Barbara, California, November 6, 1937) was an American painter, counted under Impressionism. He made his name mainly with his townscapes of New York, Chicago and Philadelphia, but also painted in the Netherlands and Belgium.
