Since ancient times, harps have been played throughout Asia, Africa, and Europe, dating back to at least 3000 BCE.
The Middle Ages and the Renaissance saw a huge increase in demand for the instrument in Europe.
By the 9th century, frame harps were common throughout Europe, with Celtic nations placing special importance on medieval harps.
The Latin American folk harps are descendants of the European diatonic harp, which evolved into the contemporary harp.
The harp also has symbolic uses in politics, religion, design and more. Ireland has long employed the harp as a political emblem. Sometimes in the framework of Christianity, angels are seen playing harps and populating heaven, while King David in Jewish art is frequently shown holding or playing a harp in Jewish art.
Corporate logos also frequently feature the harp.
