The Mariakerk is one of the oldest Romanesque churches in Groningen. According to dendrochronological research on the oak cap, the church dates from around 1237. Monastery jokes and remnants of a Norman gate bear witness to this age. The Ripperda family has left its mark: a wind vane with the family coat of arms, memorial plaques in the choir room, and under the choir the family's crypt. This parish church has been the property of the monastery for some time: in the 15th century of the monastery of Johannieter in Oosterwijtwerd, and from 1476 to 1609 of the monastery in Oosterwierum.
