The 463-meter-high Kirkjufell near the town of Grundarfjörður, on the north coast of Snaefellsnes peninsula, is one of Iceland's most iconic mountains. Kirkjufell literally means "Church Mountain," and it's not hard to imagine how that name came about. Like a cathedral, the mountain seems to rise from the waters of the fjord.
This digital painting is an adaptation of a photograph taken in May 2022. The month of May had begun, even by Icelandic standards, freezing cold; hence on the upper half of the mountain the snow that had fallen the day before. But on this day, spring seemed to have begun in Iceland as well: the sun broke through and it was windless, causing the mountain to reflect in the front part of the bay.
