Eckersberg travelled in the early summer of 1839, from Thursday 9 May to Thursday 23 May, with the corvette "Galatha" across the North Sea to Dover (from where the ship sailed on to Livorno to pick up Thorvaldsen and his sculptures and art collection) (cf. Eckersberg's diaries, 2009, vol. 2, pp. 824-27). On the night of 11 to 12 May, the brig "St. Jan" was rammed by a Finnish knapsack ship, causing the ship to lose the foresail, foremast and main jib, after which it had to search for Frederikshavn (ibid., p. 824f).
Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (Blåkrog, Jutland, Denmark 2 January 1783 - Copenhagen, 22 July 1853), usually referred to as C.W. Eckersberg, was a Danish painter. He was one of the founders of the Golden Age of Danish painting. In his painting, he focused on portraits, genre paintings (some of them historical) and shipping paintings. In 1803, he was accepted at the Royal Danish Academy of Art.
