In the 19th century, a diversity of regional costumes developed in Zeeland. Every island had its own costume and even from place to place there were sometimes significant differences. Westkapelle's traditional costume is broadly the same as elsewhere on Walcheren, although there are some important differences in the way it is worn. The expensive cloth fabrics and lavish jewellery, as worn by the wealthy Walcheren farmers and farm women, were hardly seen in Westkapelle. These children wear the costume from Westkapelle.
