During a short two-day stopover in Chicago, I decided to make the most of my time. The city has fascinated me for years, its impressive skyline, waterfront location and rich architecture making it one of my favorite places to photograph. Despite the limited time, I got up early, awake due to the time difference, and went straight out with my camera to catch the blue hour.
For this panoramic shot, I had picked a waterfront location with an unobstructed view of the skyline. It was still early, the blue hour had just begun. The city was quiet, and the light was cool and bright, perfect for a tight composition.
I chose a wide frame that shows off the skyline to its full advantage. The reflections in the water enhance the depth of the image, and Chicago's architecture shows itself in all its glory: powerful, elegant and varied. No filters, no tricks, just the right moment and the right place.
At home, I fleshed out the image with attention to colour, contrast and detail. The sky is calm, the water sleek, and the buildings form a rhythmic interplay of lines that gives the image its balance.
The result is a city portrait that brings together the power and tranquillity of Chicago in one panorama. A photo artwork now available in my shop at Werk aan de Muur
