The cheetah is adapted to hunting with a short, very fast sprint. It has a slender, flexible and muscular build, like a greyhound, with a powerful chest, a long tail and very long legs for a feline, with which it can push itself off hard. The bones of a cheetah are light and flexible, and it has a relatively large heart and lungs.
The cheetah has a light yellow coat, which is covered with small, round, black spots. The underside and chest are almost entirely white. The head is quite small, with small ears and large, orange eyes. The forehead and cheeks have very small black spots. From the inner corners of the eyes to the mouth is a black line and the lower lips are black. The back of the ears has a black and white marking. The tail is spotted, but has a series of black rings at the tip and ends in a black tail tip. The shape of the rings and the amount varies from individual to individual, similar to the fingerprint for humans. Over the lower neck and shoulders sometimes a moon of long hair runs. Especially in young cheetahs this moon is striking.
