Cavalier d' Arpino came back repeatedly to this famous mythological fable in several paintings, clearly to meet the demand of his large clientele. In this version - the replica of a signature on slate from 1592-95, today in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna - an extensive intervention of his collaborators is very likely. Andromeda, whose beauty had been compared to that of the Nereids - who had been insulted and called on Poseidon to take revenge - was tied to a cliff to be devoured by a sea monster. She was freed by Perseus and then became his husband. Perseus' sudden arrival at Pegasus is a variation on the theme introduced by Ovidi's Metamorphosis.
The girl here stands naked on the rocks, her legs, hips, vulva, belly, torso and breasts are depicted in the nude portrait.
Perseus flies on his horse to free the woman from the monster.
Giuseppe Cesari (February 1568 - July 3, 1640) was an Italian Mannerist painter, also called Il Giuseppino and was called Cavaliere d'Arpino because he was founded by his patron Pope Clement VIII as Cavaliere di Cristo. He was frequently visited in Rome by both Clement and Sixtus V. He was the head of the studio in which Caravaggio trained when the younger painter arrived in Rome.
