The Kathedrale Basiliek Sint Bavo in Haarlem is an iconic monument and the main church of the diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam. Built in the late 19th century, the church was designed by architect Joseph Cuypers, son of the famous Pierre Cuypers. The church is dedicated to Saint Bavo, Haarlem's patron saint, who originated in Ghent, a city with which Haarlem had trade relations for a long time.
Construction of the cathedral began in 1895 and was completed in 1930. On 2 May 1948, St Bavo Church was elevated to basilica by Pope Pius XII, making it a religious centre of great importance. With its impressive architecture and rich history, the cathedral basilica is one of the largest churches in the Netherlands, after St John's Cathedral in Den Bosch.
This artwork captures the beauty and grandeur of this basilica on a foggy winter morning, offering breathtaking views of its gothic towers and iconic design.
