About ‘Castle in Greece’ by Fotojeanique .

Methoni castle overlooking the ionic sea. Methoni castle is a medieval fortress in the port city of Methoni, Messenia, in southwestern Greece.

Built in 1209 AD by the Venetians on a rocky promontory, the castle is one of the largest in the Mediterranean.

The natural harbor near the castle and its strategic location led it to become a source of contention over the centuries between several powerful peoples, who coveted the area for their own financial and diplomatic interests.

The castle reached its peak during the 1st Venetian rule, between the 13th and 15th centuries, while its final decay occurred around 1828, when the inhabitants were transferred outside the walls, leaving it in disrepair. Despite being abandoned, the castle continues to echo with memories of long-forgotten glories.
