About the artwork

Taxi in Havana, Cuba.
Havana is the lively capital of Cuba and is situated on the bay of the same name. The city has many old buildings and monuments. The most famous districts for tourists are Habana Vieja (Old Havana), Centro and Vedado. Habana Vieja is the oldest district, full of historical sights. It seems as if time has stood still here. Centro is a district in decline with buildings from different eras in various architectural styles. Around 1890 the construction of this district began. The French architect Forestier has contributed in the '20s to the image of this district: the Paseo del Prado, the square in front of the cathedral and the park la Fraternidad are from his hand. The third district is Vedado. Vedado means 'forbidden'; the district received this name because it was not allowed to build on this site in the 16th century due to military reasons. Today it is the most important district with wide avenues, large houses and lots of light. Most political buildings are there and there are many shops, cinemas and offices, but it also looks like an old district because of the old houses with large gardens.
Havana is home to 2,132,394 (2018) [3] people spread over 15 municipalities in an area of 726.75 km². It is the second largest city in the Caribbean after Santo Domingo in Haiti. 19% of the Cuban population lives in the capital. From the 17th century many Spaniards arrived in Cuba. In the first half of the twentieth century, Spanish immigration reached a peak.
