A mysterious moonscape is created because the photo was taken after sunset on a tripod with a long shutter speed. The surf hitting between the rocks of solidified lava creates a mysterious haze due to the long shutter speed. The Capelinhos volcano in the background erupted in 1957 and, in addition to new land, caused a lot of damage from numerous earthquakes. Many Faial residents therefore emigrated to America, among other places, at that time. The lighthouse Ponta dos Capelinhos is a restored remnant from that period although it now serves only as a museum. For night photos's, the Azores are unique because of the absence of light pollution. On clear nights, millions of stars can therefore be seen.
