This is a digital artwork created by a fusion between a drawing and a painting. The drawing was created using drawing techniques of pencil and charcoal and the painting consists of multiple layers of various painting techniques.
The work was inspired by a photo I took in the dunes near Kwade Hoek. It was springtime. The marram grass was still tinged with brown but wonderfully full. There was a moderate to strong wind and the sun was shining too. The undulating movements of the grass across the dunes caught my eye and I tried to capture a compact composition in which you could feel those chaotic movements of the grass. This moment did it for me. The bulk of the grass is pushed back while there are other grasses pointing the other way.
The end result is a figurative abstract artwork filled with calming chaos. You feel the wind rushing through the beach grass. You move with it. From one place to another until you get lost in it. And then you give up. Fatigue sets in. And before you know it, it lulls you to sleep. That's what I like about this artwork. It clears your head. It makes you think of nothing more. It calms you down and gives you peace.
