Heliconius melpomene Heliconius melpomene is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae, found from Central America to the Southern Region of Brazil. The species has long wings with an orange stripe down both forewings.
The species has many forms and therefore sometimes resembles Heliconius erato.
Heliconius melpomene is poisonous and has red patterns on its wings.
The caterpillar is white with black dots.
The head is orange-yellow and the body is covered with spines. The butterfly visits flowers of the genus Psiguria, as well as Lantana and Hamilia.
