The malachite butterfly (Siproeta stelenes) is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae.
Malachite is a green mineral, and its wings are black with bright green spots on the top, and reddish-brown with olive-green spots on the underside.
The wingspan is 8 - 10 centimetres.
The caterpillars are black with red spots, and carry horns on the head and spines over the rest of their body. The adult butterflies eat nectar from flowers and rotting fruit.
They therefore like to visit orchards with mango, citrus fruit and avocado.
They also drink juices from dung and dead animals. The species is found in the Neotropics, from Brazil to Florida and South Texas.
In Central America, it is a very common species.
