About the artwork

The High Fens are bordered by Eupen in the north, Monschau in the east, Malmedy in the south and Spa in the west. Most of Belgium is located in the East Cantons (the German-speaking Community plus the municipalities of Weismes and Malmedy) which belonged to Germany until 1919. With peaks just under 700 metres, it is the highest area in Belgium, including the highest point in the country, the Signal of Botrange (694 metres TAW, 692 metres above sea level). The small rivers Roer, Vesder (German: Weser), Gileppe and Helle (German: Hill) also originate in the High Fens.

The area is characterized by a lot of precipitation. A number of reservoirs in the area use this water as drinking water and for power generation. The landscape consists of high moorland, heathland, poor grassland, meadows and many forests. In and around the scattered villages you can find characteristic farmhouses. Some houses and farmhouses are surrounded by characteristic metre-high beech hedges, which offer protection against wind and rain. Examples can be found in Sourbrodt (Belgium) and Kalterherberg (Germany).
