About ‘Bulls in combat, De Maashorst nature reserve 1’ by Marijke Veltmaat

In early April (2026), I visited the Maashorst Nature Reserve, a beautiful area with various walking routes. (There are, of course, cycling routes as well.) Everything is clearly signposted with posts. I asked for information at the Maashorst visitor centre (Nistelrode) and started the route from there.

They also have fun, hands-on activities for children in the area. When I arrived, there was a school trip, and the children were given a landing net to take with them as they set off under supervision.

For my photo walk, I took the short route, which is about 4 kilometres long. Along the way, there are signs everywhere with information about the animals, the nature in this area and the history of the area. The photo's are of Tauross cattle.
I first spotted the cattle about halfway along the route. In the distance, they were eating young leaves from the branches. I took the first few photos cautiously (you are advised to keep a distance of at least 50 metres from these animals). I walked on and, about 500 metres from the end of the area, I saw the cattle waddling towards me again. At this distance, I chose a good spot to take photos. They were coming towards me; it was a bit nerve-wracking, but out of respect for these animals, I walked to a safe distance and took photos from behind a tree. The last two taurosses actually started fighting each other in the open. Both cattle later continued their journey unscathed, apparently (and fortunately!) not bothered by the cyclists and walkers passing by.
