About the artwork

The brown-red heidelibel (Sympetrum striolatum) is a true dragonfly from the family of the Wheatbolt (Libellulidae). It is a dragonfly of 42 to 44 mm that occurs in almost all of Europe. In the Netherlands it is a common species from July to October. Regularly there are invasions from the south.
The brown-red heidelibel has few striking features. The legs are black with yellow stripes. The thighs of the front legs are usually three-coloured: black-yellow-black. The black stripe on the forehead (between the eyes) stops at the edges of the eyes and hardly runs down (the so-called 'hanging moustache' is missing). Often there is a dark smudge along the edges of the eyes. The male has a long and slender abdomen, without knot-shaped widening at the end. Dyed out males get a red abdomen, which is usually less deep red than the blood red and stone-red heidelibel. In side view there are usually some black spots on the abdomen. The side of the thorax turns from yellow to grey-brown, but two planes remain conspicuously yellow. Young males and females have a yellow abdomen, which later turns brown or reddish brown in the females. On the side of the abdomen are black stripes, which do not form a continuous line.
The body length of adults is between 35 and 44 millimeters; the larva is 14-18 mm long. ( wikipedia)
