Brown bears mainly eat plants, such as tubers and roots, which they dig out with their long claws. When they want to eat meat, they target easy prey such as cattle and domestic animals. Brown bears also feel at home near water. Near waterfalls or shallow spots in a river, they can lie in wait for hours to outwit salmon that migrate upstream to spawn. The bear then jumps on top and paralyses the fish with a powerful bite or a rakish blow from its strong legs. Once caught, there is no escape for the salmon. Bears hibernate, called torpor, at least in cold regions. However, this is very light and can be interrupted at any time. Brown bears can live up to 25 years, even older in captivity.
