This variety of cabbage was developed through hybridization in the northeastern Mediterranean in the 6th–5th centuries BC. For centuries, asparagus cabbage was little known outside of Italy.
The earliest mention of broccoli is found in the French treatise Historia Generalis Plantarum (1587).
This vegetable is rich in micronutrients and vitamins, especially C and K. Its vitamin A content surpasses that of all brassicas.
Among other antioxidants, broccoli contains substances that can effectively combat cancer cell growth.
