It is a sturdy, stocky cat that was bred in England in the late 19th century for specific colour and markings in its coat. By crossing with Persians, British shorthairs gained more body volume and head size. As a result of those crosses, long-haired kittens are occasionally born, which most British Shorthair breeders regard as a legacy of the past and sell as pets.
