Bright, wild rose hips against a blue autumn sky by Silva Wischeropp

I discovered this photographic subject – rose hips – on 14 September 2021, late in the evening, in the countryside of the Brandenburg region. The photograph was taken with a NIKON D90 (lens: SIGMA 18.0–70.0 mm f/3.5–4.5).

These wonderful, vibrant and radiant rose hips in the sunny autumn light create a striking visual contrast and a warm, emotional depth, making them one of the most popular subjects in nature photography.

The photographic appeal lies primarily in the interplay between intense colour and the low-hanging autumn sun:

Vivid colour contrast: The deep, glossy red of the ripe rose hips stands in complementary contrast to the often still-green leaves, the blue sky or the warm golden-brown of the autumnal background.
Translucency in backlight:
When the low-hanging autumn sun shines on the rose hips from behind (backlight), the fruits seem to glow right from the inside out. The skin captures the light, emphasising the contours of the fruit.

Picturesque bokeh:
By using a wide aperture, the leaves and branches in the background, illuminated by the sun, blur into soft, golden circles of light (bokeh), which elegantly isolate the in-focus rosehip.

Textures and details:
The warm light brings out the smooth surface of the rose hips – some of which are covered in morning dew or frost – as well as the fine textures of the withered flower buds and thorny twigs, making them appear three-dimensional.
