On our trip through Vietnam, we could walk across this bridge without any problems but this was definitely not the case for several years.
In 1954, Vietnam was split into North and South Vietnam. The border came to be at the 17th parallel north. The border between North and South was the demilitarised zone (DMZ). This bridge, the Hien Luong Bridge, was right in that zone.
In 1976, North and South Vietnam became 1 country again and the DMZ lost its function. The bridge is still a memento of a time when the country was divided in all respects.
