Small insects are depicted on the flowers and leaves, which is a characteristic detail of still lifes from this period. You will not encounter these insects in the original painting, I have added them digitally.
The technique of the still life is refined with meticulous precision, and clear signs of craquelure are visible, indicating the age of the work.
The composition emphasises the beauty of nature, but also symbolises the theme of impermanence (memento mori) through the presence of insects and the lush but perishable flowers.
