For me, the bean germinating in spring symbolises new life. As a child, everyone once followed the germination process in a glass jar with cotton wool in front of the (school) window. Inspired by this, I made a photo collage of the process of how a root first grows from the bean, then the husk bursts open and a few cotyledons emerge, from which eventually the first leaves appear. The plant uses all the nutrition from the cotyledons until they are no longer needed and they finally fall off.
Inspired by old botanical plates, which used to carefully record all the life stages of plants, I created a composition. In curly lettering, the Latin name of the Kievitsboon is at the top, with the Dutch name behind it. A Kievitsboon owes its name to its dotted exterior, reminiscent of a lapwing egg.
