A U.S. Air Force Boeing B-52 Stratofortress (nicknamed BUFF) is about to land at Barksdale Air Force Base (Louisiana).
The B-52 Stratofortress is a long-range heavy bomber, capable of nuclear or conventional bombs, designed and built by Boeing. Although the aircraft dates back to the Cold War and was first deployed during the Vietnam War, it still plays an important role in US Air Force operations.
The very first B-52, an A-model, first flew in 1954; the B-model entered service in 1955. A total of 744 aircraft were built. The last aircraft were delivered in October 1962 and were of the H-model. Only this type is still in use today. Of these, Boeing built 102 aircraft, the first H-model was delivered in May 1961.
