Boeing B-29 Superfortress "Doc" Registration: N69972 Serial number: 44-69972 United States Army Air Forces The Boeing B-29 Superfortress is a US bomber used in World War II to fight Japan from bases in China and in the Mariana Islands (on Guam and two islands of the Northern Mariana Islands, Saipan and Tinian). For example, a B-29 bomber was used to drop the first atomic bomb over Hiroshima on 6 August 1945; this bomber was called the "Enola Gay". Three days later, another B-29 bomber was used to drop the second atomic bomb, this time over Nagasaki. That bomber bore the name "Bockscar". Both aircraft took off from Tinian. The B-29 in the picture is one of the two still flying and this picture was taken during an airshow at Sheppard Air Force Base on 26 October 2019.
