Black terns are birds of the shallow marsh. They breed on floating aquatic vegetation (preferably crabgrass), nest rafts and mud banks in shallow and moderately nutrient-rich marshes and in agricultural areas with wide ditches and mud banks. They forage not far from the colonies on small fish, amphibians, insects and earthworms. Black terns winter in West Africa.
