Black and white panorama of a herd of elephants in Etosha National Park, Namibia.
Etosha National Park in Namibia is one of the largest nature parks in southern Africa. The park was already founded in 1907, after the war between the Germans and the Hereros.
Etosha largely consists of an enormous salt pan, surrounded by dry bush land.
Characteristic of Etosha are the large amounts of game that can be spotted: elephants, zebras, lions, different kinds of antelopes etc. Natural and artificial watering places help the game population to survive the dry season. The large number of tourists who visit Etosha every year contributes significantly to Namibia's GDP.
Elephants are large mammals in the Elephantidae family within the order of trunks (Proboscidea). Traditionally, two species are recognized, the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), although there is evidence to suggest that African elephants may consist of two separate species, the savanna elephant (Loxodonta africana) and the forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis), respectively.
Elephants are distributed in sub-Saharan Africa and southern and southeastern Asia. They are the only surviving species of trunked animals; extinct are the mammoths and mastodons, among others. They are the largest living land animals. The male African elephants can reach a height of 4 m.
