Black/White,Mill,Arkel, The Netherlands
Jan van Arkel is an octagonal cornelling mill with a brickwork substructure on the Vlietskade in Arkel in the Dutch municipality of Molenlanden. The mill was built in 1852. Already in 1840 permission was granted to build a flour mill on the spot near the bridge on the Vlietskade. Because of the high excise duties - the taxes on the pumping station - this plan was abandoned. In 1846 a grain miller from Giessen-Nieuwkerk was granted a permit to build a mill in an orchard, but the provincial government was of the opinion that the mill would be too close to the public road. Because it was not possible to adjust the building plans at the time, it took until 1851 before they were realized.
