The bittern is a stealthy bird. It is mainly found among reeds and in marshes. It has a camouflage of the reeds and when threatened, it goes into a so-called pole position with its neck straight up. Thus, it hardly stands out among the reeds. In spring the male calls its characteristic call, a low humming sound.
