At high tide, water from the Nieuwe Merwede flows into the National Landscape Park de Biesbosch via the Kievitswaard and Noordwaard, from where it flows on to the sea via the Hollandsch Diep. This has been made possible by the Room for the River project. Places like Gorinchem and Werkendam get less flooding as a result. Here and there, dead trees stand in the water, giving the landscape an almost surreal look.
