Between the glow of gold and the stillness of night

by Walter G. Allgöwer

Beneath the colourfully patterned ceilings of Wat Suthat, a silent procession of light and shadow unfolds. The gilded and black Buddha figures, all in the Bhumispara mudra, embody the same instant: the moment when Gautama touches the earth and the world opens up. Yet each statue tells the story differently. The gold shines like the rising sun, warm, unshakeable, a promise of clarity. The black figures, on the other hand, seem as though born of the night, deep and still, as if they held the secret of inner transformation hidden in their hearts.
Together they form a line of timelessness, a flow of forms and meanings. The pedestals, richly adorned with red, gold and sparkling ornaments, seem like small altars for every breath of realisation. The passage itself becomes a transition: from the noise of Bangkok into a world where silence takes on weight.
Here, in the Royal Temple of Phra Nakhon, opposites meet without contradiction. Gold and black, light and shadow, awakening and tranquillity. And as you walk amongst them, you feel something settling within – as if, for a moment, your own spirit were touching the same ground as the Enlightened One, in the heart of Asia.
