About "Bermagia plant with blue flowers"

by Ronald Smits

About the artwork

Bernagie is an easily recognisable, rough-haired, annual, 20 to 60 cm high plant, which is cultivated in gardens as a kitchen herb and from there wild.
It is also sown.
Originally it originates from Southern Europe.
Flower
It blooms from June to autumn with beautiful blue flowers, which are pink in the bud. This pink colour disappears during flowering and changes to blue via purple blue. The semi-arranged flowers have five pointed petals and in the centre a double ring of white scales, where the black-purple stamens and style protrude.

Applications
Bernagie has many applications. Through the centuries it has been used as a medicinal plant. This is shown by the addition of "officinalis", which means "medicinal&quot. The edible flowers are nowadays used in salads, among other things. They taste like cucumber. Bernagie is therefore also called cucumber herb.

Oil is extracted from the seeds, borage oil. In phytotherapy the oil is used against skin aging, stretch marks, eczema and premenstrual syndrome.

You can find her in sunny, warm, open places, preferably with cultivated land, such as fields, ruins and along roads.
