The architects Martin Gropius and Heino Schmieden built the building in the formal language of the Renaissance as an arts and crafts museum. Today, the building is one of the top locations for high-profile exhibitions in Berlin.
The Gropius Bau is dedicated to cultural history, contemporary art and photography.
Since 2001, the house has been operated by the Berliner Festspiele. A carefully selected mix of local and international photography, installation art, archaeology, and modern and contemporary art, especially in combination with its magnificent architecture, has since earned the Gropius Bau a reputation as one of the most beautiful exhibition buildings in Germany.
