At the time of German division, Friedrichstraße station was one of the most important border crossing points between East and West Berlin.
Immediately after August 13, 1961, the day the Berlin Wall was erected, the station was divided into several areas after a provisionally organized transitional phase, which were gradually strictly separated structurally by walls and intermediate ceilings:
The underground facilities with the platforms of the S-Bahn (Wannsee - Frohnau, Lichterfelde Süd - Heiligensee and Lichtenrade - Gesundbrunnen lines) and U-Bahn (Alt-Mariendorf - Alt-Tegel) were exclusively available to passengers coming from the West. They could only be used for changing trains, shopping at the Intershop kiosks and as access to the border crossing. The subway platform could only be reached via a long connecting corridor from the subway S-Bahn platform.
