The Weerdsluis lock forms the connection between the Utrecht city canal and the Vecht. The lock was built in the Middle Ages to maintain the water level in the Utrecht canal and canal system. Around the sluice, a suburb called Bemuurde Weerd, which was itself walled and fenced in, emerged as early as 1300. Many small craft businesses settled here. In shipping, the Vecht was an important link between Amsterdam and the Rhine River.
