The Crimson Mill in the morning mist
Even before the first birds began to sing, a soft mist hung over the Groningen landscape. The sky slowly coloured from cool blue to warm orange, and right in that moment the Crimean windmill stood, proud and timeless, in the middle of the silent backdrop. This photo was taken during an early trip to the mill, rewarded by a sunrise that enveloped everything in a dreamy glow.
The Crimson Mill, also known as The Phoenix, has a rich history. Originally built as a polder mill, it burned down completely in 1903. Only a year later, it rose again, symbolising strength and resilience. With its impressive flight of over 24 metres, it is even the largest polder mill in Groningen.
