The Dijkgatbos or sluitgatbos is a beautiful forest near Wieringerwerf. It is humid, with beautiful autumn colours.
The forest was created after a dike breach in 1945. In an act of revenge by the Germans, who were losing the war, two holes were blown in the then 16-year-old dike of the Wieringermeer on 17 April 1945. The water flowing in in two places caused two whirlholes, today's two wheels, initially 20 and 26 metres deep. In two days, the polder filled up. A slurry pit, from the farm whose foundation is still visible in the southern wheel, washed away 400 metres in a south-westerly direction. At the eastern edge of the forest, it still lies there, on a bridleway. After the war, restoration of the polder was given high priority. As early as 5 August 1945, the dyke was closed again waterward. Remnants of the old dyke body can still be found between the two wheels.
