Daigo-ji, a UNESCO world heritage site in southeast Kyoto, is a Shingon Buddhist temple with more than 1100 years of history. The vast complex starts at the top of a mountain and extends downwards, consisting of lower (Shimo-Daigo) and upper (Kami-Daigo) sections. Several buildings and treasures of the temple have been designated as national treasures and cultural assets, including the wooden statue of the main object of worship of the temple, Yakushi Nyorai (the medicine Buddha).
