Beam of light in the gorge of Antelope Canyon. You can find more pictures of this beautiful gorge in my album 'Antelope Canyon'.
A tidal wave has carved out the beautiful shapes in the limestone walls. This has resulted in abstract, surrealistic patterns. Upper Antelope Canyon was discovered in 1931 by the 12-year-old girl Sue Tsosie. Her people, the Navajo Indians, called the gorge "Tse Bighanilini", which means "the place where water flows through rocks". The Navajos have kept the find of the canyon secret for years. Upper Antelope Canyon is located inside a high, red sandstone plateau; the entrance is a narrow opening that doesn't give you the idea that there will be something special to see. But that changes as soon as you walk in, you find yourself in a magical world between sloping sandstone walls, which get beautiful colours in the filtered sunlight. Especially around noon the light is perfect. Upper Antelope Canyon is about 90 meters long, and the walls are on average about 40 meters high. The sandy soil is largely flat.
