The story of the beach chair begins in the spring of 1882 in the workshop of the imperial court basket maker Wilhelm Bartelmann in Rostock. He was visited there by the aristocratic lady Elfriede von Maltzahn, who suffered from severe rheumatism that made her beloved stays on the beach difficult. She wanted a chair to protect her from the wind and sun, because she did not want to give up her beloved holidays by the sea despite her serious illness.
She told Bartelmann her ideas and he wove the first beach chair out of willow and cane, actually more of a beach chair, because it was still a single-seater.
Other bathers marvelled at this unusual seat when they saw Frau von Maltzahn sitting on the beach, and Bartelmann soon received further orders from other bathers.
