The Battle of the Nations Monument in the south-east of Leipzig was erected in 1913 in memory of the Battle of the Nations. From 16 to 19 October 1813, the so-called Battle of the Nations took place at the gates of Leipzig. It led to Napoleon's defeat by the troops of Russia, Austria, Prussia and Sweden as part of the Wars of Liberation. Germans fought on both sides in the battle, which was considered the largest in history until the First World War.
At 91 metres high, it is the tallest monument in Europe and one of Leipzig's well-known landmarks.
