They are spiny plants with flowers in heads surrounded by pointed winding leaves.
The colour is usually red to purple, sometimes lilac or white.
The fruits at the top are covered with fruit fluff (thistle fluff).
It is a biennial plant: in the first year the root and leaf rosette form; in the second year the flowers and fruits develop.
Many compound flowers of genera other than Carduus are also called thistles in common parlance; many also have a species name ending in -thistle; for example, those of the genus Cirsium ( feather thistles) and Sonchus (milk thistles) and Onopordum acanthium ( road thistle).
Although blue sea holly has similar pointed leaves, it is not even a compound flower; the plant belongs to the umbellifer family.
